Access Control Overview

The moment a building has more than a handful of staff, mechanical keys stop working as a security control. Nobody knows who holds what, leavers keep copies, and a lost master means rekeying the site.

Access control replaces that with credentials you can revoke in seconds and a record of every door event. For multi-site organisations it also means one administrator can manage every site from one place, with permissions set by role rather than by habit.

We design the fire interface properly. Every electrically locked door on an escape route is interfaced to the fire alarm to BS 7273-4 and fails safe, so security never compromises evacuation.

Door survey

Each door assessed for leaf type, frame, escape status and appropriate locking method.

Locking hardware

Maglocks, electric strikes, motorised locks and free-exit devices selected per door.

Credentials & enrolment

Fobs, cards, PINs or mobile credentials, with a documented issue and revoke process.

Mechanical keys have no audit trail and no revocation. Once a site has more than a handful of staff, contractors and cleaners, nobody can say with confidence who holds what — and a single lost master means rekeying the building.

Access control replaces that with credentials you can withdraw in seconds and a record of every door event. Time profiles keep contractors to the windows they are supposed to be on site, and role-based administration means a site manager can run their own building without being able to touch anyone else’s.

The part that is easy to get wrong is egress. Every electrically locked door on an escape route must release on fire alarm and on power failure, interfaced to BS 7273-4 and tested door by door at commissioning. We record that testing as part of handover.

Escape route duty

Doors on escape routes must allow egress without a key, code or credential at all times. Where electric locking is used, BS 7273-4 governs how the release is actuated by the fire detection system, and the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order places the duty for safe means of escape on the responsible person.
