CCTV Design

Most disappointing CCTV is disappointing for one reason: the camera was never specified for the job it is being asked to do. Monitoring a car park, recognising a known face and identifying a stranger require very different pixel densities on target.

We survey each viewpoint against what you need from it — detect, observe, recognise or identify — and specify lens, resolution and mounting position accordingly. The result is footage that stands up when it is actually needed.

Systems are installed by our own engineers with remote viewing, sensible retention and a documented data protection position, so the system helps you rather than creating a compliance problem of its own.

Figures follow BS EN 62676-4. A single high-resolution camera covering a wide scene rarely achieves identification at the far end — position matters more than megapixels.

The single most common complaint about CCTV is that the footage was useless when it was finally needed. Almost always the cause is design, not equipment: a camera placed to cover as much ground as possible, at a resolution that cannot resolve a face at the far end of that ground.

We start from the operational requirement for each view — monitor, detect, recognise or identify — and work backwards to lens, sensor and mounting position. That produces more cameras in some places and fewer in others, and a system that does what you actually bought it for.

Storage, network load and retention are calculated at design stage too. A recorder running at capacity silently overwrites, and a system pushed onto a saturated network drops frames exactly when something is happening.

CCTV that captures identifiable individuals is processing personal data under UK GDPR. You need a lawful basis, clear signage, a defined retention period, restricted access, and a documented process for responding to subject access requests within one month.
