Alarm Systems

Insurers rarely accept “we have an alarm”. They ask which grade, who installed it, who monitors it and what happens when it activates. A system installed to BS EN 50131 by an inspected, accredited company answers all four.

We grade the risk, design detection that covers the ways people actually get in, and set the system up so staff can arm and disarm it without generating false alarms — which is the real reason most systems get abandoned.

Monitoring options run from self-monitoring by app through to keyholder response and police response via a unique reference number, with escalation you define.

Standards & police response

Police response to intruder alarms is governed by the National Police Chiefs’ Council security systems policy, which requires installation and maintenance by a company inspected by a recognised body, and compliance with BS EN 50131 and PD 6662.

Will our insurer accept the system?

We ask for the policy wording before designing. Most specify a grade and require an inspectorate-registered installer — both of which we design against and certify.

Usually. We inspect the panel and detection, confirm what is supportable, reprogram engineer codes and issue a takeover certificate.

Mostly through detection choice and user training. Dual-technology detectors in awkward areas, sensible part-set zones and proper staff briefing eliminate the large majority.

Wired is more robust and preferred in new work. Wireless is right for listed buildings, occupied premises and anywhere cable routes would be destructive — modern devices signal battery status well in advance.
